Discussing Support Diplomatically

Every middle-class parent who has a kid overseas would know the hardship in supporting him or her when the studious student is doing his or her studies there. Here are letters that convey in a diplomatic manner how the sensitive topic of financial assistance can be handled in a gentlemanly manner.

Just an Old Friendly Letter

Ah, the exciting old days...when the plotters unsuccessfully attempted to democratically overthrow the Sarawak state government under Chief Minister (Tan Sri) Taib Mahmud... Here is the former Chief Minister and governor (Tun) Rahman Yakub's public letter in the Sarawak Tribune dated 11/4/87 (Click to enlarge) to SUPP Assistant secretary-General and Minister for Works and Industrial development (Tan Sri) Wong Soon Kai dated 11th April, 1987. It would prompt a quick response from Soon Kai in a stinging no holds barred public rebuttal dated 12/4/87 through the Borneo Post on 15/4/87 (Read Soon Kai's rebuttal letter somewhere in my blog).

Ah yes, what is the value of friendship in politics?

By the way, why don't the warring parties within PRS help boost the local newspaper sales by publicly airing their differences utilizing the imaginative tactic by Yakub? It would clarify a lot of matters and let the curious public be the jury!

DAY 8: Haunting Voices

Mr. Abdul Razak Baginda is powerful person. He does have money. He have connection in police, in government.... Mr. Razak Baginda promise to help me
when I was in Mongolia. That's why I came to see him and for help but he trying to kill me. Maybe I did mistake to bother him and to blackmail him, but he didn't promise to me I would never come from far away to Malaysia. Only reason I'm here is asking help from Mr. Razak.

Altantuya was always there with him (in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore) ... They looked like boyfriend and girlfriend.

An Apology

Dear Fellow Edmontonians,

If any of you ever surf into this blog, I'm terribly sorry to upset your sensitivities by putting up this controversial picture of one of the wounded students of the so-called 'Montreal Massacre' again by your highly respected Edmonton Journal.

As you can see, I've tactfully reduced and minimized the size of the picture and even if you click on it, it isn't so large that one of the poor female student's swollen reddish tits could be clearly seen unlike the extremely large front page original size of 30 cm by 20 cm which I treasure.

I cannot promise I will not enlarge the picture's size, albeit slightly larger perhaps, in future, if there is a demand out there, which I do not forsee, considering how conservative and modest we Orientals are or pretend to be in public.

Having said all these, I strongly believe an invaluable lesson could be learnt following such a controversy for mankind or humankind (This politically correct term as I'm still a de facto Edmontonian, I think) in Canada and elseway: Adult male's & female's tits exposure-Okay; female student's tit-NEVER! Nein! Das ist eine Schweinerel! We must always protect the young at all times, including university kids.

Sincerely yours,

Canuck Luke

A Beloved Witness for Christ to the End

I was researching in my archives when I came across this carbon copy of a letter written by the late Garnet Dearnley, from New Zealand. In it, he aptly described his experience in Miri here in those days. In delving deeper, I learnt more about him and actually came to the realisation that this European truly loved my old school, Saint Columba's School and its founding mission, the Anglican Church.

Sadly, the late Dearnley, a jolly lecturer at Tanjong Lobang College died at quite an early age in a fatal motor-cycle accident near where he is presently buried, in the oldest Christian graveyard in northern Borneo, between St. Columba's School and St. Columba's Kindergarten. His grave is closest to Abang Indeh Road with abundant yellow daffodils growing beside it and has the friendly handsome gent's pic, placed there by his son whom I met over a year ago.
Every day, as I bring my wife who works as the headmistress of St. Columba's kindergarten there, his face would be seen with a friendly grin.
