Any Mirian recall those memorable moments when we watched movies in the old cinema right in front of the Police Station? The station is still there but instead of the theartre at the prime location, we have an impressive beautiful tall building today!

I also recall the day a young man by the surname of Tan was fatally stabbed to death while he was watching a horror movie, "Return from the Dead" (By the way, someone said the title was "Ghost's Revenge" ... What I do recall is the word "dead') ! He was seated somewhere at the front row, just a few rows from us.

Halfway through the flick, we heard some screams and shouts. Then all hell broke loose as everyone ran helter-skelter for their dear lives out of the place! We ran out as well without a clue as to what was happening. There were rumors of a police operation, gang fight and a murder.

It was only sometime in the following day that we heard the gory details about the murder that was splashed in the local papers.

The Death Pest-carrying Horseman

So after watching/experiencing thrilling/horrifying/shocking events like the fall of the Berlin Wall, communism, break-up of the Soviet Union, the tsunami, urban warfare-World Trade Towers and Pentagon bombings, London, Madrid and Bali bombings, sarin and anthrax attacks, suicidal bombing of various ages and sex, Hurricane Katrina flooding in Alabama, global warming, dramatic political changes in ruling governments ... We have a pandemic that's scaring a hell lot of the world!!!

Is this another accurate fulfilment of the Holy Bible prophecy in the Book of Revelations that warns of wars, famines, pestilence, etc... as we live in the end of days?

Teen is swine flu's first victim in London as ministers warn 40 a day could die by end of summer

A teenager became the fourth Briton to die from swine flu, doctors said yesterday.

The 19-year-old from London tested positive for the virus after he died on Wednesday.

Like the UK's other three swine flu victims, he was suffering from 'underlying health problems'.

The death came as the Chief Medical Officer warned against buying potentially dangerous counterfeit flu drugs over the internet.

Health experts say some of the medications on sale are useless - while others are danergous - laced with rat poison and other toxic chemicals.

Warning: Health Secretary Andy Burnham issues the swine flu predictions in the Commons earlier this week where he warned that as many as 40 people a day could die from the disease

Yesterday there were more than 7,400 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK. If the number of cases continues to grow at the current pace, the UK could have 100,000 new cases every day by the end of August.

So far, most swine flu patients have suffered only mild symptoms. However, they are still be urged to stay away from GP surgeries or hospitals if they suspect they have the flu.

The latest victim lived in South London. His details were yesterday being withheld on the request of his family.

It was reported that the teenager had learning difficulties and was very ill with a rare longterm condition which left him with serious chest infections.

Dr Simon Tanner, regional director of public health for NHS London, said the capital has seen a spike in flu cases in the past week. It is now the second-worst affected area after the West Midlands with more than 1,900 cases.

'It's with sadness that we have to announce the death of a patient in London who has subsequently tested positive for H1N1 swine flu,' he said.

Everyone had a responsibility to protect those who were vulnerable from the virus, he said.

'There are people out there in the community - precious individuals that have got really difficult medical conditions - who are particularly vulnerable when the population has a virus like this in it,' he said. 'We've all got a responsibility for their sake.'

He said most of the confirmed cases showed mild symptoms, but added: 'Some people may be more susceptible to the virus and if you have flu-like symptoms, it is important that you talk to your doctor.'

Jacqui Fleming, 38, of Glasgow, was the first person in the UK to die of swine flu. She died last month, two weeks after her son, Jack, was born 11 weeks prematurely.

Jack died later but had not contracted the virus.

The second victim was a 73-year-old man from the Inverclyde area of Scotland. Then a week ago, Sameerah Ahmad, six, became the youngest UK victim.

She was born with a rare life-threatening disease and died at Birmingham's Children's Hospital after contracting swine flu.

Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson yesterday stressed that Britain had massive stockpiles of the anti-flu drug Tamiflu and would be one of the first countries to have access to a vaccine. Tamiflu doesn't cure swine flu, but eases symptoms and speeds up recovery time.

Sir Liam warned against trying to buy the drug online. 'There's a lot of concern amongst health authorities that people might buy counterfeit drugs,' he said.

'We have got a massive stockpile of Tamiflu in this country and everybody can have access to it through the health service.'

According to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 'spam' emails promoting Tamiflu are now more common than those promoting Viagra.

The Government is also buying in 130million doses of vaccine - enough for the entire population. The first delivery is expected next month.

'Now we're entering the most dangerous phase'

Under the Government's pandemic action plan, there are three levels of alert for a serious flu outbreak. Earlier this week the Health Secretary announced the UK would now enter the third, most serious, phase.

The first stage is Containment, which Britain entered when the first cases, a honeymoon couple, were confirmed in Scotland on April 27.

The priority is to stop the disease spreading as much as possible. Everyone with suspected swine flu has their diagnosis confirmed by a lab report, and is given the anti-viral drug Tamiflu. All recent contacts of infected people are traced and also given Tamiflu. Schools are closed if teachers or pupils contract the disease.

The second stage is Outbreak Management, which the country entered on June 25.

Action against swine flu was stepped up in three 'hot spot' areas - London, Glasgow and the West Midlands - where it was no longer possible to contain its spread.

In the hot spots, suspected cases were no longer sent for lab testing, with GPs doing the diagnosis, and people with swine flu got Tamiflu, but contacts did not as a matter of course. Schools in the hotspots were no longer automatically closed.

The third stage, which the whole country has now entered, is called Treatment.

GPs will be given the discretion to hold back Tamiflu to those with minor symptoms - and in a few weeks it may be rationed to at-risk groups. Vaccines will begin to be delivered once the first batches arrive in August.

For me, I was in the newsroom and the big boss shocked me by telling me the news when I came in earlier than usual by FIVE hours... and last night I was looking at some ghastly autopsies performed on a Caucasian and an Asian in Thailand...!!!

Miri's Firecrackers Accident

Don't play with firecrackers! The consequences of not listening to good advice is this!

The poor Indon apparently set up the lengthy string of crackers
by dangling it from a small metal rod that was placed inside a bigger metal pipe.

When the carckers exploded, the pipe flew off and despite the distance he was standing from it, smashed his skull severely, cracking it open and scattering his brains everywhere.

This accident happened in Miri City during the Chinese New Year celebrations this year.

Playing with firecrackers is an offence of course and rightly so considering the accidents that do happen to youngsters... and no, this fella was not a youngster!

The Tale of Two Women

I am not the author of this somewhat brilliant piece of comparative observation of two women who stole the headlines when they died years ago.

I do tend to be empathetic towards Princess Diana after having read several biographies about her but the writing, nevertheless, that follows gives me cause to ponder about her life she chose... and I believe sharing it with everyone will make everyone wiser persons!

Remember, before you start that the Holy Bible's old testament exhorts everyone to seek God's guidance in life. Look at Exodus 33:13: "Teach me Your ways..."

Now here's the final part of this poem that we could further reflect on...

We must appreciate the depth of compassion which Mother Teresa's life evidenced and, when compared to any of us, humbles us with our fascination of material wealth. Someone once told Mother Teresa, "I wouldn't touch a leper for a thousand pounds". ... To which she replied, "Neither would I. But I would be willing to touch him for the love of God".

Part II Valentine's Day Love Story

My apologies for not finishing the rest of the story!

...What he saw next confused him: the couple was walking towards a cemetery.

He got out of his car and followed.

Then he saw his girl: a photograph of her smiling sweetly as ever at him from her tombstone. His paper cranes were right beside her.

Her parents saw him. He asked them why this had happened.

They explained sadly she did not leave for France at all. She had been ill with cancer. She had believed he would make it someday, but she did not want to be his obstacle.

Therefore she had chosen to leave him.

For Whom the Crow Cries...

On 6/12/08 whole family heard loud shrieks of many crows flying over the house while in the house around 2 pm; said loudly to them: "Someone distant to us but known to us has died."

While getting into my car, little kid unexpectedly asked, "What's in the jungle?"

I replied quickly to frighten him, "Ghosts!"

On 7/12/08 went straight to bookstore to purchase Chinese United Daily News & was shocked to see large & small pics of Simon Teo's corpse. The famous sports-master, a friend of mine (also my partner's ex-colleague in Sri Mawar Primary School), who was holding a position I once had in the secondary school close to the huge Chinese cemetery, was killed due to severe head injuries he received when he slipped on slippery muddy terrain and rolled down into a deep ravine at our city's Canada Hill.

On 14/12/08, heard loud shrieks of a crow flying over the house around 9:00 a.m., remarked to partner someone we knew was gone.
Checked papers in supermarket & library but found nothing the next day & the few other days.
Today, 17/12/08 while going through some old Chinese newspapers in the Public Library, suddenly came across the death notice of my ex-neighbor, schoolmate, classmate's sister and my partner's fellow church member, ex-roommate & close friend, sweet warm, bubbly, cheerful Chin Lee Ling... and she died of cancer on 14/12/08 leaving many of us unaware she had the fatal disease.... May she rest in peace....

In Memory

... of those warm endless days when my two bright students' New Zealand-educated mum graciously showered my teaching staff and I with gifts of appreciation.... A bright shiny star, the humble daughter of a datuk with a heart of gold... a rising star holding the position of Assistant Manager in Miri City's Public Bank.... A Tragic Merdeka Day

From joy to sorrow... as a celebrating group of Independence Day celebrants accidentally killed a youngster early this year on 31st August, 2007. The sixteen year-old student was a pillion rider on a motor-bike.

16 Crows: Bad Omen?

It wasn't too long ago that I mentioned the sight of 16 crows with bloodshot eyes outside my residence. Several deaths-six to be exact soon followed ... What is disturbing, if I may repeat the story, is that the last time I saw a crow in my large garden, a close overseas-educated friend died in an unexplainable accident.

Here's an abstract of an interview by a Korean interviewer with a Malaysian girl in the blog Paths to Peace at http://www.prkkorea.com, dated 30-11-07. It briefly touches on the significance of seeing crows:

Q3. In South Korea, a crow is the symbol of a bad omen, while a magpie is the symbol of a good omen. Are there any superstitions related to animals in your country?
A3. Well, in Malaysia, we have various cultures and religions. Different cultures have different beliefs about animals. Muslims do not believe that a crow is a bad omen. Malays believe that wherever you see a group of crows, the place is dirty with garbage or something. Some other cultures believe that if you see a crow, there is a ghost.

Wow, I had no idea a crow is also a symbol of a bad omen in beautiful Korea!

Nein, no, Malaysian interviewee, my garden and the surrounding areas are spotlessly clean and well-maintained so the crows shouldn't have suddenly appeared during the light drizzle...

Grim Countdown

Since spotting the 16 crows outside my residence on 20th November, 2007, 10 deaths of one person and five cats have been recorded in the vicinity of my place...

Yesterday my car accidentally ran over one cat ... It's the first time an animal has been killed by a vehicle at my residence...

Romantic Story (2)

In case any of you cruised by this blog and you're reading this story, let me tell you I'm repeating what I heard from a buddy. This version might therefore be different from what you may have heard or read before.

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have. She had wanted her parents to put his paper cranes beside her, because if the day comes when fate brings him to her again... he can take some of those back with him... Once you have loved, you will always love. For what's in your mind may escape but what's in your heart will always remain forever.

The guy just wept. The worst way to miss someone is to be sitting beside her knowing you can't have her, see her or be with her ever again.

Remembering Bruce & Brandon Lee...

This is not a tribute ... yet to Bruce Lee, our late Kung Fu master hero, seen here with his late son, Brandon. It's not even his birthday or death anniversary.

It just feels like a good time to remember a Chinese hero who made it big on screen and in the process, fired up the imaginations of millions of youngsters of varied races and inspired them to dream of international stardom...

No wonder that in once war-torn Eastern Europe, the Europeans have proudly erected a statute, symbolising tolerance and diversity in race, color and creed, of this superb oriental skillful martial arts exponent in a public location.





Here's a pic of the late Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son. He's seen with his personal vehicle, a converted Lincoln which was formerly used as a funeral hearse which he drove around. Indeed, he had an interesting fascination with the afterlife.

It was sadly tragic that he was killed when a prop gun accidentally discharged a live bullet, killing him instantly during the filming of a movie in Hollywood.

Officially, the court ruled his death was merely due to an accident but there are those, including myself, who believe there is something more sinister than that...

Killed by the Triads?

This news probably appeared circa 1992-3.

It's a shocking primitive method of eliminating someone but apparently, in true Hollywood- style, the act was carried out with deadly agonising results.

It does look chillingly like the work of organized crime and the reason or reasons may not be too hard to guess as the poor murdered innocent girl had a dad who was in charge of Hong Kong Immigration. In those days before China took over the island, it was rumored that the Immigration authorities there were as corrupted as those in some Third World countries. It could have been a deadly pay-back for certain past actions by certain Hong Kong Immigration Officers who did not honor the pact with the triads which observed sworn secret vows.

The triads, according to one source, were so professional (like the Italian Mafia) that they had strict rules or codes. Oaths were sworn by the members. There were 36 oaths, the number itself having a special significance in Chinese numerology. A gang member had to utter all 36 vows such as After entering the Hung Gates, I must treat the parents and relatives of my sworn brothers as mine own kin. I shall suffer death by five thunderbolts if I do not keep this oath; I shall assist my sworn brothers to bury their parents and brothers by offering financial support or physical assistance. I shall be killed by five thunderbolts if I pretend I have no knowledge of their troubles; When Hung brothers visit my house, I shall provide them with board and lodging. I shall be killed by myriads of knives if I treat them as strangers, etc. ...

Unsolved Mystery 3: Death of a Malaysian Beauty Queen

She was an ex- Malaysian Beauty Queen and had it all: beauty, fame and fortune; yet she died tragically at a young age most dramatically under mysterious circumstances in Sibu, Sarawak.

On a fine day, the car that Carol Law was driving headed straight into the deep Rejang River at a ferry point, much to the horror of the ferry's passengers.

Was it suicide, foul play or an accident? Who and why did she die? The whole true story is yet to be told today.

UNSOLVED EAST MALAYSIAN MYSTERY 2

From tears of joy to tears of sorrow on a fine sunny day in June 1976... A beloved fair-minded charasmatic Eurasian leader, Tun Fuaad Donald Stephens and important key multi-racial members of his cabinet were killed when their plane mysteriously caught fire and exploded into a ball of flames after it crashed into a squatter area in Sabah. His party had recently won in the general elections, defeating and kicking out a corrupted government led by Tun Mustapha, a sicko notorious for his zeal to Islamise Sabahans and curtail the human rights of the non-Malays, particularly the Chinese.

My late dad was working in Sabah and had lots of incredulous stories of Mustapha's mind-boggling laughable idiotic actions as the Chief Minister.

Tun Fuaad, on the other hand, was a highly respected and loved leader and was a co-signatory to the agreement by Sabah with Sarawak to join the federation of Malaya to form Malaysia. He did not see eye to eye with Mustapha.

Also on board the ill-fated plane was a very prominent highly respected star lawyer who was a vocal out-spoken politician for Chinese rights, Chong Thien Vun.

Today a street in Sabah is named after him.
